LCPC Supervision Training

Required
Required Clinical Supervision Training for all Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs) in Illinois
Welcome to Clinical Supervision Training for Counselors!
Clinical supervision plays a vital role in the professional development of mental health practitioners.

In the State of Illinois, for example, Licensed Professional Counselors are required to work under the direction and guidance of a clinically licensed mental health professional for 3000 hours subsequent to their licensure. It is during this "clinical apprenticeship" that professional counselors develop the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities they need to be successful, independent clinicians.

Why Clinical Supervision Training?

By virtue of their credential, practitioners with clinical licensure (e.g., LCPCs, LCSWs, MDs) are eligible to provide supervision; however, not all are adequately trained to provide appropriate supervision.

To address this significant issue, several states have adopted a Clinical Supervision Training requirement for counselors.

Competent Clinical Supervisors have a good working knowledge about many areas, including:

  • Supervision Models & Applications
  • Legal & Ethical Issues and Responsibilities
  • Methods of Supervision / Supervision in Practice
  • Qualities and Skills for Effective Clinical Supervisors
  • Addressing Clinical Issues
  • Establishing the Supervisory Relationship & Record Keeping

When Am I Required To Take This Training?

It is important for you to check with your local state governing agency to get information specific to your state.  In the State of Illinois, new LCPCs are required to complete supervision training within their first full two-year renewal cycle. Although *legally* there is a window in which LCPCs could technically provide supervision without adequate training, the Ethical Code of the American Counseling Association requires the acquisition of sufficient training prior to taking on the roles and responsibilities of supervising. Therefore, the answer to the question, "When should I get this training?" is really either before you commence a supervisor's role or when your state legally requires you to, whichever comes first!

What is the Purpose of this Website?

Navigating the Supervision Training requirement can be challenging. This website has been developed to help Licensed Clinical Professionals in the State of Illinois to understand the law, decide when to get the training, find a training opportunity, and register for their Clinical Supervision Training.

Have a Question?

We hope you find these pages helpful. If you have questions or would like to inquire about upcoming trainings and locations, please contact us through the "Contact Us" page.

What's the bottom line? Why should you do your training with us?

  • As far as we know, we are the only "ONE AND DONE" training around, meaning you can meet the entire 18-hour requirement in a single training. With other programs, you have to piece together a combination of on-line and face-to-face, and there is no cohesion to what you learn or assurance that you've learned what you need to know to successfully supervise.
  • The cost is actually VERY reasonable, when you consider that a light breakfast, snacks, and lunch is included throughout the training.
  • We have an awesome track record! Visit the FAQ page for evaluation data that will knock your socks off!
  • We will customize the training for the audience. That may be hard to believe, but we do! We pre-screen for area of interest, and then pre-organize work groups to maximize participation and practical learning for you.
